Ramadan at Oxford
Ramadan Mubarak. Whether you're fasting for the first time or a veteran, this page has everything you need to observe Ramadan well during term time at Oxford.
شَهْرُ رَمَضَانَ الَّذِي أُنزِلَ فِيهِ الْقُرْآنُ هُدًى لِّلنَّاسِ
"The month of Ramadan in which the Qur'an was revealed, a guidance for mankind." — Quran 2:185
Ramadan essentials
Practical information for fasting during Oxford term time.
Suhoor (pre-dawn meal)
Most Oxford college kitchens can arrange early breakfast for fasting students — contact your college kitchen manager at the start of term. Some colleges have 24-hour food provisions. As a fallback, we recommend stocking your room with filling suhoor supplies.
Iftar times
Iftar time (Maghrib) varies from approximately 6pm in early Ramadan to 8:30pm+ later in the month. Check our live prayer times page for today's exact Maghrib time. Tutorial and lecture timetables can usually be worked around — speak to your tutor early.
Tarawih prayers
Tarawih (nightly Ramadan prayers) are held at Oxford Central Mosque throughout Ramadan, beginning after Isha. OUISoc also organises college Tarawih gatherings — check the programme below for this year's details.
Balancing work & fasting
Oxford terms sometimes overlap with Ramadan. The intensity can be managed: break your day into smaller chunks, use the quieter early hours for deep work, and be honest with tutors about how you're doing. Most are very supportive.
Welfare support
Fasting can be physically and emotionally demanding alongside academic pressure. Our welfare officers are specifically available during Ramadan for support. If you're struggling, please reach out early — not just when things become very hard.
Eid celebrations
OUISoc organises Eid celebrations after both Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. Eid prayers are held at Oxford Central Mosque. We also run a community Eid dinner — the best party of the year.

Full Events CalendarPrayer during Ramadan
The five daily prayers take on an extra dimension during Ramadan. Here's what to know about maintaining your salah during term:
Approximately 3:30–4:30am during UK Ramadan. The hardest to maintain but the most rewarding. Many students find waking for Fajr is easier when they're already up for Suhoor.
Three jama'ah times: 13:10, 13:40, and 14:10, allowing you to attend around your timetable. The second or third jama'ah often works well for students with midday commitments.
Maghrib marks the end of the fast — aim to be near the prayer room or mosque for this. Tarawih follows Isha, usually beginning around 9:30–10pm.
Jumu'ah during Ramadan
Friday prayers during Ramadan are especially attended. The three jama'ah system ensures there's always a slot that works for you.
Support available
The Oxford University Counselling Service is aware of Ramadan and can be flexible with appointments. Your college doctor can also advise if you have health concerns about fasting.
OUISoc's welfare officers are specifically available during Ramadan. Please reach out early if you're finding it difficult — there's no shame in needing support.
Welfare support →Zakat al-Fitr
Don't forget Zakat al-Fitr — it's due before Eid prayer. OUISoc can advise on the current amount and local collection points. Many students give through the Oxford Central Mosque or national charities.
Tips from OUISoc students
"Set your prayer times as phone alarms. Don't rely on memory during Ramadan — your brain is running on empty by 8pm."
— Final-year student
"Tell your tutor at the start of Ramadan that you're fasting. Most are completely understanding and will work around iftar time if they can."
— Second-year student
"The college iftar OUISoc does is genuinely one of the best nights of term. Even non-Muslims come. It makes Ramadan feel special rather than just hard."
— Graduate student
"Use the early hours after Fajr for your hardest work. Before the rest of Oxford is awake, you'll have done two hours of real work. Game changer."
— Third-year student
